Neuroscience research emphasises the information superhighway between your gut and mood. Apparently the majority of the body's serotonin is found in the gut and eating foods to balance gut bacteria is vital. eg. live yogurt, fruit ,vegetables and wholegrains etc. Research has also shown that people who took a probiotic supplement for a month experienced fewer negative thoughts.

Studies show that moving the clutter from around you will have a positive effect on a clearer, more focussed headspace.
Try investing in a few hours (or a few minutes each day) to clear the clutter from your kitchen counter, your workspace or your wardrobe. This is a new one on me too. Tiny red berries sometimes known as cowberries. Available in health food stores (or at Ikea). They have a high concentration of quercetin, an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant plant pigment used to treat heart and blood vessel conditions. Research shows they are also useful as a diuretic.

Research from the University of Auckland New Zealand suggests that writing about your troubles could boost your immune system and speed up healing.
The researchers found that participants wounds healed 3 times faster if they wrote about emotional or traumatic experiences rather than just documenting daily activities. Their reasoning is that expressive writing eases stress which in turn supports the immune system and they say that just 20mins per day over 3 days can make a difference. Food for thought. * Shredded wheat is one of the few cereals with no added sugar or salt so great for breakfast with a few added fresh fruit berries and milk.
* The water in tinned vegetables often contains sugar so just take a minute to check the label and choose the sugar free ones. A few suggestions for quick snacks free from added sugar.
How about? frozen grapes - pop a small bunch or a few single ones into the freezer. Lovely in the summer , like a short burst of sorbet. a handful of natural popcorn sprinkled with cinnamon rather than sugar. a selection of fresh berries - strawberrries, blueberries or raspberries. your own fruit lollies - puree some fresh fruit , pour into lolly moulds with a stick, freeze and hey presto. fruit kebabs - cut a selection into pieces, thread onto a skewer, dip in Greek yogurt and sprinkle with ground ginger. Turmeric has been credited with an array of health benefits - boosting the immune system, aiding digestion, fighting inflammation, slowing down the aging process of the brain, treating depression and even helping to inhibit the growth of cancer cells , and we know it has been used in Indian and Chinese medicines for many years. The benefits are down to the high levels of the natural substance CURCUMIN , which provides the vibrant yellow colour.
Fresh turmeric is now more readily available and looks like the ginger root. Scrub and grate this (do mind because the colour will stain your skin, clothes and work surfaces) or cut into thin matchstick fingers. It will give a depth of earthly flavour to a curry or for a vegetable smoothie mix it with carrot ,cucumber or beetroot. Worth a try. Knitting developed from around the third century AD to make clothes.
An online survey of 3,500 frequent knitters, showed that the more they knitted the more calm and happy they felt. Knitting has long been recognised as a therapeutic activity for people who have been through trauma - soldiers who had been shell-shocked in the 1st World War were set to knit as part of their recuperation. The pain clinic at Bath has run a weekly knitting group since 2006, and the woman who pioneered this approach is NHS Physiotherapist Betsan Corkhill who has now founded the website www.stitchlinks.com to provide support and friendship. The gentle meditative , repetitive action of knitting is soothing, helps relaxation and over time has the potential to reduce the need for pain medication. Knitting has also been shown to help with anorexia and in treating addictions. In Betsan's new book 'Knit for Health & Wellness' she explains how neuroscience is beginning to show how knitting may help our brains; -the repetitive movement promotes the release of calming seratonin which also lifts mood and dulls pain. -making things with our hands activates different brain circuits to ,say, office work. -two-handed movement across the midline of our bodies is recognised as using a lot of brain capacity, leaving less room for other issues - however chaotic our lives, knitting is under our control. If you're looking to add that vanilla taste to your baking without the sugar or alcohol of extract and without the faff of scraping vanilla pods for the seeds - this is the product for you. It's available at Waitrose (and other stores) and with an easy twist you can add the flavour and aroma of vanilla to your baking via the bean grinder. Lovely. I can recommend it - do give it a try yourself.

Here's one to try; Pineapple and coconut cheesecake.per person
Did you know that one portion (300g) of fresh pineapple contains approx 90% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C for an adult and that new research suggests that the fruit could also act as a painkiller. A study by the University of Mosul's college of dentistry looked at the chemical bromelain which pineapple contains and researchers tested its effect on pain and inflammation after dental surgery. It significantly reduced pain comparatively when compared to common anti inflammatory drug diclofenac and a placebo. Dismissed for years as ‘yuppie flu’, malingering or a purely psychological condition, CFS is still very poorly understood in the wider health community. However, over many years Dr Myhill, with Dr John McLaren Howard of Acumen Laboratory, has continued to search for a physiological cause for the multiple and totally disabling symptoms of CFS – and she has found one: poorly functioning mitochondria.
Although every CFS sufferer is different, Dr Myhill has a basic protocol which she requires all her patients to follow before addressing their more individual problems – and it is focused on rebuilding the structures underlying the health of the mitochondria. To re-use the car analogy – it is no good just filling the tank with fuel – or unblocking the fuel pipe – or cleaning the spark plugs – or unblocking the air filter. If you want to the car to work you have to do all of these things.
